A bit about me

Red, AKA Adam Morrigan,  is a master craftsman specialising in traditional leatherwork. His practice spans tanning, furrying (hair on) and the production of raw hide, and parchment; beautiful, durable products without the use of harmful contemporary chemicals, his work is ecologically sensitive. Alongside micro tannery practice his work involves the design and construction of unique leather goods – ranging from key fobs, wallets, purses and hip flasks to larger bags, backpacks – all unique and hand stitched. Any leathers used in his work that he has not tanned himself, is veg tanned.

His journey began in the 1980s, in London with traditional leather workers during a time when the trade was in steep decline. Seeking to deepen his knowledge, Red studied with indigenous artisans, including the Sami in Sweden and Native American communities, learning age-old techniques and cultural approaches to leathercraft. In the early 2000s, he earned City and Guilds qualifications in teaching and taught at Ruskin Mill in Gloucestershire, instructing students in experiential learning of tanning and leathercraft: emphasising environmentally conscious, non-industrial craftwork in leather: nose to tail. His expansive knowledge of the history of leather crafts is regularly shared through talks and lectures, he is currently writing a book on the history of leatherwork. Leather craft is now on the UK red endangered list of heritage crafts.

After a few years away from his craft, Adam returned to leather work in 2019, having been approached by a rare breed farm to create a full skin / shroud from their longhorn herd’s matriarch, a huge piece of work. In 2023, Rosie and Red Art and Leather, micro tannery and studios was established in East-the-Water Bideford, North Devon.
