A bit about me
I have come to ceramics relatively late in my life after a career in medicine, although have dabbled in stained glass and silversmithing along the way.
We retired to the South West 8 years ago and I began doing pottery at the North Devon Ceramics Academy in South Molton as a weekly morning class soon after. I was instantly addicted and have been doing it ever since. I loved throwing pots, and still do, but always wanted to get into sculpture and have been concentrating on this aspect since lockdown.
I predominantly make ceramic animal sculptures which aim to catch the essence of the animal rather than being an accurate model. I love colour and so apply this liberally, using mainly oxides and underglaze colours, with the odd accent of clear glaze at strategic points. I use a stoneware clay and hand build one off pieces which are fired in an electric kiln, and also raku fire smaller pieces.
I live in the middle of Exmoor and work from home, often on the kitchen table. I love being immersed in the countryside and this has definitely influenced some of my work.
