A bit about me
Elke Lucas began her artistic journey at Welcombe Pottery on the scenic North Devon coast. Recognizing an innate connection with clay, Elke embraced her new passion and embarked on a seven-year apprenticeship in the bustling, creative atmosphere of a working studio pottery, acquiring the skills necessary and learning along the way that there are no short cuts to becoming an accomplished potter. During her time in the UK, Elke had the privilege of a family connection with many influential studio potters, including Seth Cardew, Clive Bowen, and Martin Simpson, whose exceptional throwing skills and studio practice profoundly influenced her.
In 2012, Elke established her own pottery studio in Australia. Focusing on wheel-thrown porcelain, her repertoire expanded to encompass a diverse range of functional pieces. Her work features a minimalistic touch. This is a deliberate design choice allowing the elegance of her forms and glazes to radiate, resulting in pieces that possess both a natural sophistication and a serene beauty.
Having now come full circle, Elke has returned to Devon and is drawing fresh inspiration from the North Devon coastline and the wonderful wild clays she is discovering in the Torridge estuary. Her pots continue to exude a tranquil presence, captivating observers with their understated allure and showcasing her love for working with clay.
